ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) is a catastrophic emerging global health threat caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 has a wide range of complications and sequelae. It is devastating in developing countries, causing serious health and socioeconomic crises as a result of the increasingly overburdened healthcare system. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Ethiopia. Methods: Electronic databases, such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Research Gate, Embase, and Scopus were thoroughly searched from March to April 2022 to identify relevant studies. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality scale for cross-sectional studies. STATA-12 was used for analysis. A random-effects model was used to compute the pooled prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The heterogeneity was quantified by using the I2 value. Subgroup analysis was done for sex, age of study subjects, population type, diagnostic methods, and publication year. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot and Egger's test. A sensitivity analysis was also done. Result: 11 studies consisting of 35,376 study participants (15,759 male and 19,838 female) were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was 8.83%. There was substantial heterogeneity, with an I2 value of 99.3%. The pooled prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was higher in males (9.27%) than in females (8.8%). According to the publication year, a higher prevalence was obtained in 2021 (12.69%). Similarly, it was higher in the population of specific groups (16.65%) than in the general population (5.75%). Conclusion: the national pooled prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the Ethiopian population was 8.83%. This indicates that the burden of COVID-19 is still high, which urges routine screening and appropriate treatment. ABSTRACT

Mental health needs and disparities are widespread and have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the greatest burden being on marginalized individuals worldwide. The World Health Organization developed the Mental Health Gap Action Programme to address growing global mental health needs by promoting task sharing in the delivery of psychosocial and psychological interventions. However, little is known about the training needed for non-specialists to deliver these interventions with high levels of competence and fidelity. This article provides a brief conceptual overview of the evidence concerning the training of non-specialists carrying out task-sharing psychosocial and psychological interventions while utilizing illustrative case studies from Kenya, Ethiopia, and the United States to highlight findings from the literature. In this article, the authors discuss the importance of tailoring training to the skills and needs of the non-specialist providers and their roles in the delivery of an intervention. This narrative review with four case studies advocates for training that recognizes the expertise that non-specialist providers bring to intervention delivery, including how they promote culturally responsive care within their communities.Copyright © 2023 The Author(s).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Assessing the maternal mental health status during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is necessary to prevent the occurrence of severe mental disorders. Prenatal depression, anxiety and stress disorders are prominent in pregnant women living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and highly associated with poor maternal and neonatal outcomes. Therefore this study aimed to assess the level of depression, anxiety, and stress among HIV-positive pregnant women in Ethiopia during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Amhara region referral hospitals from 17 October 2020 to 1 March 2021. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select 423 eligible women. A structured, pretested and interviewer-administered questionnaire was employed to collect the data. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was implemented to identify factors associated with women's depression, anxiety and stress. Statistical association was certain based on the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with its 95% confidence interval (CI) and p-values ≤0.05. RESULTS: Prenatal depression, anxiety and stress among HIV-positive pregnant women were 37.6% (95% CI 33 to 42.3), 42.1 (95% CI 37.7 to 46.7) and 34.8% (95% CI 30.3 to 39.2), respectively. Having an HIV-negative sexual partner (AOR 1.91 [95% CI 1.16 to 3.15]) and being on antiretroviral therapy >1 year (AOR 2.18 [95% CI 1.41 to 3.36]) were found to be statistically significant with women's antenatal depression, while unplanned pregnancy (AOR 1.09 [95% CI 1.02 to 2.33]) and did not discuss with the sexual partner about HIV (AOR 3.21 [95% CI 2.12 to 7.07]) were the factors associated with prenatal anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, more than one in three HIV-positive pregnant women had depression and anxiety. Thus, implementing strategies to prevent unplanned pregnancy and advocating open discussion with sexual partners about HIV will play a large role in reducing pregnancy-related depression and anxiety.

ABSTRACT

The genetically engineered bollworm-resistant Bt cotton hybrid varieties offer opportunities for reducing crop losses and enhancing productivity. In Eastern Africa region, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya have approved and released Bt cotton in 2012, in 2018, and in 2019, respectively. The region has potential to grow cotton in over 5 million hectares. For commercial plantings in Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya, hybrid Bt cotton seeds have been imported from India. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic-induced supply chain disruptions, high shipment costs, bureaucratic procedures for importing seeds, and foreign exchange shortages, farmers have not been able to access Bt cotton seeds. Stakeholders are seeking local production of seeds to provide sustainable access by farmers at affordable cost. Country case studies reveal the importance of enhancing capacity for local seed production and extension advisory services. Revival of the cotton sector needs enhanced public-private partnerships to pave the way for sustainable seeds access in the region.

ABSTRACT

Even though COVID-19 vaccinations must be effective and safe to stop the pandemic, vaccine skepticism is growing everywhere. One of the challenges to world health today is vaccine hesitancy, which results from peoples' refusal to accept the vaccine. The author found that the estimated willingness to accept COVID-19 vaccine was 28.4%. Globally, a people's perceptions and beliefs may have an impact on how well they accept the COVID-19 vaccine. Peoples who have a negative attitude toward vaccinations may be reluctant to get vaccinated. The author recommends the increasing awareness level of the COVID-19 vaccine to increase the vaccine acceptance rate. Therefore, healthcare workers should provide continuous and updated information on the COVID-19 vaccine to increase the awareness level of the communities.

Background: Universal access to health information is a requirement for all global health strategies in the era of pandemics. Getting health information from the internet is a great concern for the quality of patient healthcare. This study aimed to determine the association between digital health literacy and information-seeking behavior among physicians during COVID-19. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from December to February 2021 with a total sample size of 423. A pretest was performed among physicians before the actual data collection. After the data collection, the data were checked, cleaned, and exported into STATA v. 14. Descriptive statistics, binary logistic regression, and multivariable logistic regression analysis were applied. Then a 95% CI and a p-value of less than 0.05 were used to declare statistical significance. Results: The study revealed that 53.81% of physicians had high digital health literacy and 52.46% had high information-seeking behaviors. Health information-seeking behaviors were determined by digital health literacy, which was 2.25 times more likely than those who had low digital health literacy (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI: [1.11-4.57]). Health-related websites (67.5%) were the most common sources of health information, and 63.30% of physicians find digital health literacy easy or very easy to learn. However, 206 (50.92%) find it difficult or very difficult to decide if the information is reliable, verified, and up-to-date. Internet access (AOR = 1.90, 95% CI: [1.16-3.12]), frequency of searching for information (AOR = 5.35, 95% CI: [2.01-14.29]). All were discovered to be significantly associated with physicians' health information-seeking behaviors. Conclusions: Digital health literacy is a key to seeking health information online for appropriate decision-making. Increasing internet access, and providing ICT training, and integrate it into the health information revolution agendas, helping to disseminate health information and provide timely, reliable, and relevant news and genuine information needed for their work.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a paradigm shift in routine care delivery with the widespread transition to virtual care without demanding preconditions. Caregivers' satisfaction is a critical parameter to ensuring the quality of clinical service in the pediatric population. Despite this fact, such patient-related factors are under-investigated and poorly documented in developing countries such as Ethiopia. The study was aimed to assess caregivers' satisfaction regarding teleconsultations and associated factors during COVID-19 pandemic at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: Health institution-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in randomly selected caregivers who were served with phone-based medical consultations during the pandemic. Data were collected by means of a pretested, structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Data were entered into Excel 2016 and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Logistic regression models were used to predict the association of study variables and adjusted for possible confounders. Results: Overall, 177 (61.5%) of participants reported satisfaction with the teleconsultation. Female caregivers (AOR=1.78; 95% CI 1.05, 3.01), having family support (AOR=2.6; 95% CI 1.45, 4.65), access to a nearby laboratory (AOR=2.18; 95% CI 1.24, 3.83), having access to nearby pharmacy (AOR=2.82; 95% CI 1.63, 4.86) were found to be predictors of caregivers' satisfaction with teleconsultation in the study area. Conclusion: A considerable number of caregivers were satisfied with the teleconsultation service during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important for healthcare providers and policy makers to strengthen the provision of teleconsultation service options for caregivers including women and those with better access to diagnostic centers and pharmacies. They should try to make teleconsultation caregiver-friendly.

Background: Depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) are common among high school students, and they have a negative impact on their academic performance and future lives. Pandemics, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), exacerbate these issues. Although psychological problems are studied in developed countries, they are overlooked in developing countries such as Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess the prevalence of psychological problems and associated factors among high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sawla town, Gofa zone, southern Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 663 randomly selected high school students from March 1 to 31, 2021. The data was collected using the depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21) questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were computed to identify factors associated with DAS. An adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI was used to see the strength of the association and statistical significance was declared at p-value <0.05. Results: The overall prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress were 52.1% [95% CI: 48.3, 55.98], 52.6% [95% CI: 48.8, 56.4], and 22.6% [95% CI: 19.4, 25], respectively. Being rural residence (AOR: 4.88, 95% CI: 3.02, 7.88), living in a prison house or with a husband (AOR: 5.94, 95% CI: 1.65, 21.3), having a lower academic level (AOR: 6.23, 95% CI: 3.42), having poor knowledge about COVID-19 (AOR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.21, 2.53) and poor COVID-19 prevention practices (AOR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.79) were associated with depression. Similarly, being a rural resident (AOR: 3.73, 95% CI: 2.38, 5.84), being a lower academic level (AOR: 2.54, 95% CI: 1.50, 4.30), having poor knowledge about COVID-19 (AOR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.08, 2.19), and poor COVID-19 prevention practices (AOR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.36, 3.32) were associated with anxiety. Furthermore, stress was associated with rural residence (AOR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.42, 3.53), lower academic level (AOR: 4.70, 95% CI: 2.12, 10.4), and poor knowledge of COVID-19 (AOR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.13, 2.58). Conclusions: Depression, anxiety, and stress were all prevalent among high school students in the area. Rural residence, lower academic level, and poor knowledge about COVID-19, as well as poor COVID-19 prevention practices, all increase the likelihood of DAS. As a result, school-based psychological counseling interventions, particularly during pandemics, are critical.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of human life. Its effect was particularly severe in sectors that are directly related to agricultural production and food security. This research was conducted to uncover the perception of smallholder farmers in eastern Ethiopia about the pandemic, prevention and control measures, and its impact on their livelihood. Through a semi-structured interview schedule conducted on 176 randomly selected rural households, we found a varying level of practicing the recommended COVID-19 prevention and control measures. The study also found that the response of the media, family members and religious organizations to the pandemic was rated as "very good". The most important impact of the pandemic was associated with household's inability to obtain a reasonable price for their agricultural produce, and inability to attend religious gatherings/prayers. Other impacts of the pandemic were fear of losing friends and getting sick/losing life. Considering the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, a reinforced awareness creation campaign, behaviour change communication by extension workers, and continued provision of basic health and sanitation facilities was recommended. Such interventions should focus on improving the access of smallholders to Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs). Continued engagement with diverse media platforms and developing trust is also needed to increase the spread of reliable COVID-19 related information. Moreover, safeguarding the agricultural sector against risks and uncertainties has to be prioritized through strengthening early warning system, distributing improved/early-maturing seeds and fertilizers, providing insecticides/pesticides, linking smallholders to market outlets, and emergency food aid via the Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP).

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the findings of longitudinal research conducted in Ethiopia exploring the effects of COVID-19 school closures on children's holistic learning, including their socio-emotional and academic learning. It draws on data from over 2,000 pupils captured in 2019 and 2021 to compare primary school children's dropout and learning before and after school closures. The study adapts self-reporting scales used in similar contexts to measure grade 4-6 pupils' social skills and numeracy. Findings highlight the risk of widening inequality regarding educational access and outcomes, related to pupils' gender, age, wealth and location. They also highlight a decline in social skills following school closures and identify a positive and significant relationship between pupils' social skills and numeracy over time. In conclusion, we recommend a need for education systems to promote children's holistic learning, which is even more vital in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Introduction: There were different studies done and found a highly variable level of COVID 19 prevention practice; however, there was no summarized evidence on the prevention practice of chronic disease patients in Ethiopia. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to assess the pooled prevalence of COVID 19 prevention practice and associated factors among chronic disease patients in Ethiopia. Method: Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using PRISMA guidelines. Comprehensive literature was searched in international databases. A weighted inverse variance random effect model was used to estimate pooled prevalence. Cochrane Q-test and I2 statistics were computed to assess heterogeneity among studies. Funnel plot and Eggers test were done to assess publication bias. Review manager software was used to identify determinants of COVID 19 prevention practice. Result: Overall, 437 articles were retrieved and finally 8 articles were included in this review. The pooled prevalence of good COVID 19 prevention practices was 44.02% (95%CI (35.98%-52.06%). Being rurally reside (AOR = 2.39, 95% CI (1.30-4.41)), having educational status of cannot read and write (AOR = 2.32, 95% CI (1.22-4.40)), and poor knowledge (AOR = 2.43, 95% CI (1.64-3.60)) positively associated with poor practice. Conclusion: Good COVID 19 prevention practices of chronic disease patients in Ethiopia was low. Rural residence, educational status of cannot read and write and poor knowledge was positively associated with poor practice. Therefore, policymakers and program planners should target those high-risk groups in improving their awareness to enhance their practice specifically focusing on those who are rural reside and with low educational status.

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected public health system and surveillance of other communicable diseases across the globe. The lockdown, travel constraints and COVID phobia turned down the number of people with illness visiting to the clinics or hospitals. Besides this, the heavy workload of SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis has led to the reduction in differential diagnosis of other diseases. Consequently, it added to the underlying burden of many diseases which remained under-diagnosed. All these diseases were associated with high morbidity and burdened the public health system during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this critical public health menace, majority of the laboratory workforce was mobilized to the SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis. This has limited the surveillance efforts that likely led to under diagnosis and under-detection of many infectious pathogens. Lockdowns and travel limitations also put a hold on human and animal surveillance studies to assess the prevalence of these zoonotic viruses. In addition, lack of supplies and laboratory personnel and an overburdened workforce negatively impacted differential diagnosis of the diseases. This is especially critical given the common symptoms between COVID-19 and other pathogens causing respiratory illnesses. Additionally, the vaccination programs against various vaccine preventable diseases were also hampered which might have added to the disease burden. Despite these challenges, the world is better prepared to detect and respond to emerging/re-emerging pathogens. India now has more than 3000 COVID-19 diagnostic laboratories and an enhanced hospital infrastructure. In addition, mobile BSL-3 facilities are being validated for onsite sampling and testing in remote areas during outbreak situations and surveillance activities. This will undoubtedly be valuable as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves as well as during future outbreaks and epidemics. In conclusion, an increase in the emergence and re-emergence of viruses demonstrates that other infectious diseases have been neglected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lessons learned from the infrastructure strengthening, collaborations with multiple stakeholders, increased laboratory and manufacturing capacity, large-scale COVID-19 surveillance, extensive network for laboratory diagnosis, and intervention strategies can be implemented to provide quick, concerted responses against the future threats associated with other zoonotic pathogens.

Background Novel-coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is currently a pandemic and public health emergency of international concern, as avowed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Ethiopia has become one of the affected countries as of March 15, 2020. Objective This study aimed to assess the knowledge, perceptions, and practices among the Jimma University medical center (JUMC) visitors in Jimma town. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 247 sampled visitors, from 20–24 March 2020. Consecutive sampling was used to recruit the participants. The study tools were adapted from WHO resources. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the status of knowledge, perception, and practices. Logistic regression was executed to assess the predictors of dominant preventive practices. Results Of the 247 respondents, 205 (83.0%) knew the main clinical symptoms of COVID-19. 72.0% knew that older people who have chronic illnesses are at high risk of developing a severe form of COVID-19. About 95.1% knew that the COVID-19 virus spreads via respiratory droplets of infected people, while 77 (31.2%) of the respondents knew about the possibility of asymptomatic transmission. Only 15 (6.1%) knew that children and young adults had to involve preventive measures. Overall, 41.3% of the visitors had high knowledge. The majority, 170(68.8%), felt self-efficacious to controlling COVID-19. 207(83.3%) believed that COVID-19 is a stigmatized disease. Frequent hand washing (77.3%) and avoidance of shaking hands (53.8%) were the dominant practices. Knowledge status and self-efficacy (positively), older age, and unemployment (negatively) predicted hand washing and avoidance of handshaking. Conclusions The status of knowledge and desirable practices were not sufficient enough to combat this rapidly spreading virus. COVID-19 risk communication and public education efforts should focus on building an appropriate level of knowledge while enhancing the adoption of recommended self-care practices with special emphasis on high-risk audience segments.

ABSTRACT

The shift to renewable sources of energy has become a critical economic priority in African countries due to energy challenges. However, investors in the development of renewable energy face problems with decision making due to the existence of multiple criteria, such as oil prices and the associated macroeconomic performance. This study aims to analyze the differential effects of international oil prices and other macroeconomic factors on the development of renewable energy in both oil-importing and oil-exporting countries in Africa. The study uses a panel vector error correction model (P-VECM) to analyze data from five net oil exporters (Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Libya and Nigeria) and five net oil importers (Kenya, Ethiopia, Congo, Mozambique and South Africa). The study finds that higher oil prices positively affect the development of renewable energy in oil-importing countries by making renewable energy more economically competitive. Economic growth is also identified as a major driver of the development of renewable energy. While high-interest rates negatively affect the development of renewable energy in oil-importing countries, it has positive effects in oil-exporting countries. Exchange rates play a crucial role in the development of renewable energy in both types of countries with a negative effect in oil-exporting countries and a positive effect in oil-importing countries. The findings of this study suggest that policymakers should take a holistic approach to the development of renewable energy that considers the complex interplay of factors, such as oil prices, economic growth, interest rates, and exchange rates.

ABSTRACT

Purpose -- In this research work, emphasis is made on collecting society response and acceptance levels of technologies developed and transferred by TVET Institutions. Critical information on the technical and performance parameters of transferred technologies was received from many respondents who were closely associated with society. Design/methodology/approach -- The methodology included questionnaires based on 5-point Likert scale questionnaire with an objective to ascertain the acceptance levels of technologies developed and transferred by TVET Institutions. The questionnaire contained queries addressing variety of issues, like type of technologies developed and developing, manpower participating in technology development, problems associated with technology development and transfer. The methodology followed was based on the analysis of the response received on technical questionnaire that was designed and responses received from the people located in Addis Ababa city Practical Implications: COVID-19 has been rising and mutating in many countries since it was discovered by the end of 2019. Many countries, including Ethiopia has seen the spike and fall of COVID-19 regularly. This non-linear behavior of COVID-19 infection rate curves around the world has prompted many educational institutions like TVET (Technical Vocational and Education Training) institutions located in Addis Ababa to develop and transfer technologies like hand washing machines, face masks, sanitizers and other anti-covid technologies. These equipment's posse's characteristic simple operational and quality properties like usability, functionality, efficiency, etc. This research will help to gather the technical information pertaining to design, quality and performance of Hand washing equipment's, face masks, Hand sanitizers and other equipment's from the society. Findings - Divergent and constructive opinions were received from the society to improve and meet the ever-rising demand for anti-COVID-19 technologies. The user response on developed and transferred technology prove the usefulness to combat COVID-19 spread but also finds many applications with in the life of the public. Cronbach alpha reliability test value of 0.73 was obtained after analysis of the response data. The results prove the excellence and consistency of the responses received on the development and transferred technologies. Overall, the research findings help to build and transfer most robust, quality and cost-effective technologies that is a need of the hour to fight against COVID-19 transmission. Originality/value -- COVID-19 has posed many challenges to public and has resulted in many deaths in Addis Ababa and entire Ethiopia. ABSTRACT

Purpose --The main purpose of this research work is to evaluate the efforts of TVET efforts' in developing and transferring useful technologies in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia. TVET Institutions are engaged in developing and transferring technologies like hand washing devices, sanitizer sprayers, ventilators, beds, disinfection devices, sanitizers, antiviral finish fabrics, masks and hand-free devices that is used to prevent contamination of the human body while working with materials of different kinds. These equipment's posse's characteristic simple operational and quality properties like usability, functionality, efficiency, etc. The evaluation of these developed and transferred technologies help to prevent transmission of COVID-19 at community level. Design/methodology/approach -- The methodology used in this research was descriptive and purposive sampling type. The sample pool consisted of 5 TVET institutions. 40 respondents participated in this questionnaire study. The response was recorded through interview questionnaires based on the 5-point Likert Scale. Data analysis and Cronbach's alpha reliability tests were computed using SPSS and Minitab software. Practical Implications: The coronavirus is the deadly pandemic and highly contagious disease the human mankind has witnessed since 1918 flue pandemic. However, the coronavirus spread in Ethiopia at the community level has prompted many TVET (Technical Vocational and Education Training) institutions and universities to ramp up their efforts to develop and transfer technologies. Hence TVET organizations need therefore to develop and transfer technologies that are useful to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This research will help to gather the technical information pertaining to design, quality and performance of Hand washing equipment's, face masks, Hand sanitizers and other equipment's. Findings - The results prove TVET Institutions' efforts were successful in developing and transferring the technologies required to combating COVID-19. Cronbach's alpha (reliability test) value is 0.77 for the TVET colleges, indicating the data is excellent, unique and consistent. The position of the TVET institution is excellent as regards to the efforts put in developing and transferring technologies used for combating COVID-19 in and around Addis Ababa. The responses received were unique in nature. Originality/value -- COVID-19 has posed many challenges to public and has resulted in many deaths in Addis Ababa and entire Ethiopia. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has gravely affected the world, including students, due to the high level of contracting infections. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the magnitude of mask use and associated factors among students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using mixed methods was conducted among students at Gambella Teachers' Education and Health Science College, Gambella Region, Southwest Ethiopia, from March 5 to March 30, 2021. The stratified random sampling technique was used. Proportional allocation of samples was used to randomly select case teams, and a simple random sampling technique was used to recruit the students. The data were collected by trained and experienced enumerators. Data were entered into EpiData (version 3.1; EpiData Association) and exported to SPSS (version 22; IBM Corp) for analysis. Logistic regression was executed. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with the 95% CI was used to determine the association and strength with the outcome variable. The qualitative data were transcribed, translated, coded, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Then, the themes were used to triangulate the quantitative study. RESULTS: The study included a total of 379 participants and yielded a response rate of 95.5% (379/397). The majority of study participants were older than 25 years, with the mean age being 26.34 (SD 5.8) years. This study found that the magnitude of mask use among students was 87% (330/379). The odds of mask use were higher among students who were female (AOR 3.32, 95% CI 1.191-9.248), younger (AOR 2.55, 95% CI 1.155-5.627), agreed that not all persons with COVID-19 develop severe disease (AOR 3.38, 95% CI 1.36-8.41), agreed that there is currently no effective cure (AOR 6.28, 95% CI 1.36-28.99), performed proper washing with soap and water (AOR 0.027, 95% CI 0.004-0.182), had started to stay home (AOR 0.168, 95% CI 0.054-0.52), agreed that COVID-19 is fatal (AOR 0.236, 95% CI 0.084-0.666), agreed that a flu vaccine is sufficient for COVID-19 prevention (AOR 3.874, 95% CI 1.540-9.749), and disinfected equipment and working areas at least once a day (AOR 0.222, 95% CI 0.086-0.575). CONCLUSIONS: This study found that the magnitude of mask use among students was relatively moderate in Ethiopia. Sex, age, agreeing that not all persons with COVID-19 develop severe disease, agreeing that there is currently no effective cure, performing proper washing with soap and water, starting to stay home, agreeing that COVID-19 is fatal, and agreeing that the flu vaccine is sufficient to prevent COVID-19 were independently associated with mask use among students. Therefore, colleges should aggressively encourage students to wear masks and monitor the implementation of COVID-19 prevention regulations along with the accessibility of masks.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Childhood immunization is one of the most cost-effective public health strategies to prevent children's mortality and morbidity from infectious diseases, but the Covid-19 pandemic and associated disruptions have strained health systems, and worldwide 25 million children missing out on vaccination in 2021. Of the 25 million, more than 60% of these children live in 10 countries including Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess complete childhood vaccination coverage and associated factors in the Dabat district. METHOD: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from December 10/2020 to January 10/2021Gregorian Calendar. The data for this study was extracted from information collected for the assessment of maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health and health services utilization in the Dabat demographic and health survey site. Vaccine-related data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. An adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval was used to identify the presence and the direction of the association. RESULTS: Based on vaccination cards and mothers/caretakers' recall 30.9% (95%CI: 27.9-34.1%) of children aged 12-23 months in the Dabat district were completely immunized. Urban residency [AOR 1.813, 95% CI: (1.143, 2.878)], delivered in the health facility [AOR = 5.925, 95% CI: (3.680, 9.540)], ANC follow-up during their pregnancy [AOR 2.023, 95% CI: (1.352, 3.027)], rich wealth index [AOR = 2.392, 95% CI: (1.296, 4.415)], and parity [AOR 2.737, 95% CI: (1.664, 4.500)] were significantly associated with complete child vaccination. RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION: Complete vaccination coverage among children aged 12-23 months in the Dabat district was lower than the Global vaccine plan and Ethiopian ministry of health goal in 2020. Therefore, Health care providers and other stakeholders should mobilize the community to improve mothers' health-seeking behavior toward pregnancy follow-up and health facility delivery to improve childhood vaccination. Besides, expanding the service to remote areas are necessary to increase the immunization access.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To assess the implementation science outcomes of a COVID-19 e-health educational intervention in Ethiopia targeting healthcare workers via the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, Adaption, Implementation, Maintenance) framework. METHODS: A series of three one-hour medical seminars focused on COVID-19 prevention and treatment education were conducted between May-August 2020. Educational content was built from medical sites previously impacted by COVID-19. Post-seminar evaluation information was collected from physician and other participants by a survey instrument. Cross-sectional evaluation results are reported here by RE-AIM constructs. RESULTS: The medical seminars reached 324 participants. Key success metrics include that 90% reporting the information delivered in a culturally sensitive/tailored manner (effectiveness), 80% reporting that they planned to share the information presented with someone else (adoption and implementation), and 64% reporting using information presented in their daily clinical responsibilities 6 months after the first medical seminars (maintenance). CONCLUSION: Grounded in a theoretical framework and following evidenced-based best practices, this intervention advances the field of dissemination and implementation science by demonstrating how to transition healthcare training and delivery from an in-person to digital medium in low-resource settings like Ethiopia.
